The Perfect Suit for Every Occasion

From draft night to boardrooms to wedding aisles — the right suit for the right moment changes everything.
The Foundation: Understanding What "Perfect Fit" Actually Means
Most men have never worn a properly fitted suit. They've worn suits that were close enough — shoulders that were almost right, a jacket that was almost the right length, trousers that were almost the right rise. Almost is not the same as right, and your body knows the difference even when you don't.
A perfectly fitted suit feels like a second skin. You stop thinking about it within five minutes of putting it on. That's the goal.
The Seven Measurements That Matter Most
At CJ Custom Clothiers, we take 23 measurements for every client. But seven measurements determine whether a suit will fit or merely approximate a fit:
1. Chest: Measured at the fullest point, with natural posture. Not flexed, not slouched — just you standing normally.
2. Shoulder Width: The most important measurement in menswear. The shoulder seam should sit exactly at the edge of your natural shoulder — not hanging over, not pulling inward.
3. Sleeve Length: With your arm at your side, the jacket sleeve should end where your shirt cuff begins — typically 1/4 to 1/2 inch of shirt cuff showing.
4. Jacket Length: The bottom of the jacket should cover the curve of your seat. A common rule: the jacket length equals the distance from your collar to your wrist, divided by two.
5. Waist Suppression: The jacket should follow your natural waist — not hug it so tightly you can't button it, not hang straight down like a box.
6. Trouser Rise: This is where most off-the-rack suits fail. Rise — the distance from the waistband to the crotch seam — varies enormously by body type. Getting this wrong makes everything uncomfortable.
7. Trouser Break: How much the trouser leg rests on the shoe. Full break is traditional. No break is modern. A slight break works for almost everyone.
The Fabric Question
A suit's fabric affects how it looks, how it feels, how it ages, and how it photographs. The main considerations:
Weight: Measured in grams per meter (GSM). Lighter fabrics (200-250 GSM) work for warmer climates and year-round wear. Heavier fabrics (280-320 GSM) hold structure better and wear well in colder months.
Thread Count: Expressed as "Super 100s" or "Super 150s" — higher numbers mean finer, more lustrous fabric. Super 100s are durable and practical. Super 150s are luxurious but require more care.
Composition: Wool is the gold standard. A wool-silk blend adds sheen. A wool-cashmere blend adds softness. Avoid polyester for anything you want to last.
Understanding Suit Styles for Different Occasions
Business Professional: Two-button, notch lapel, charcoal or navy, no pattern or subtle herringbone. This is the workhorse suit.
Board-Level Executive: Same as above, but in finer fabric. Peak lapels optional. The construction and fabric quality will be visible even to non-fashion people — they won't know why it looks better, but they'll know it does.
Gala / Formal: Black or midnight navy, peak lapels, satin lapel facing for black tie. Nothing communicates presence like a perfectly fitted tuxedo.
Draft Night / Media: Be intentional. Bold colors work when they're part of a considered aesthetic. The suit needs to work on camera — avoid anything that causes moiré patterns (small checks or tight plaids).
Wedding: Build around the event's formality and the color palette. Navy is almost always right. Light gray works for outdoor or daytime ceremonies.
The CJ Custom Clothiers Difference
Off-the-rack suits are built for a statistical average that doesn't correspond to any individual person. Custom suits are built for you — your proportions, your posture, your lifestyle.
When you wear a suit built for your body, something changes. Your posture improves because the suit supports it. Your confidence increases because you stop thinking about your clothes. Your presence in a room shifts.
CJ Custom Clothiers starts at $1,500 for suits and $175 for shirts. Every garment is hand-delivered to you personally by CJ.
